The Best Teas From China

Rishi Tea & Botanicals has spent decades exploring the remote mountain regions of China in search of master craftsmen and artisanal tea producers. We work closely with suppliers to ensure our Chinese teas are grown in pristine environments. We source from caretakers who utilize a deep personal understanding of the land to grow and craft teas that reflect the unique terroir and history of the region. Many of our suppliers represent long lineages of heritage tea makers whose influence is seen around the world. Every cup of Chinese green tea, fragrant jasmine or earthy Pu’er reflects the beauty of this land.

How to Enjoy Teas From China

China produces many types of tea that lend themselves well to different preparations. The classic malty black teas from Yunnan, vibrant green teas of Hubei province and fruity nectar-like white teas from Fujian can all be brewed hot, served over ice, or even left overnight to create ethereal cold brew infusions. Our aged Pu’er tea really shines when brewed in a Chinese-style Gongfu or Gaiwan teapot and can be steeped multiple times.

FAQs

Yes. The main difference between Japanese and Chinese green tea is how they are made. Green teas from China are typically roasted or toasted using dry heat, which brings out a floral sweetness and chestnut flavor. Japanese green teas are usually steamed, which gives them a more savory umami quality with bright vegetal notes.

Some of the best teas from China represent styles that originated there and have been perfected over centuries. Black (red) tea, delicate white tea, excellent green tea, Oolong, which ranges from mildly to heavily oxidized, and Pu’er (dark) tea are all produced in China.

Tea cakes come in many different sizes. Some of our aged Pu’er tea cakes are pressed into individual servings to make brewing easy. If you have a larger tea cake, use a tea pick or knife to gently pry off a portion of tea, about 7-9 grams. Then, use a Gaiwan or Gongfu-style teapot to brew the tea. With certain aged teas, we recommend pouring out the first infusion, which rinses the tea and awakens it for the next steeping. Check the product packaging for each tea’s unique brewing instructions.
